programs:  Master of Arts in Oral Traditions

Whendi directs the Master of Arts in Oral Traditions at The Graduate Institute in Milford, CT. This multi-disciplinary graduate degree program integrates many areas of study, including cultural anthropology, sociology, mythology, folklore, narrative studies and ethnomusicology.

Inquiry in Oral Traditions calls not only for an investigation of myriad oral art forms -- from epic poetry to slam, chants to healing charms, hand-clapping games to funeral laments, sea shanties to travel song -- but also for an exploration of how these diverse traditions serve society… by cultivating identity, conveying cultural values, establishing codes of conduct, carrying genealogy, preserving history, mapping territory, transmitting skills, unifying labor and more.

Whendi works with colleagues John Miles Foley  and Robin Moore.

In addition to teaching in the Master of Arts program, Whendi facilitates workshops in Oral Traditions for teachers and performers on a per diem basis.
